Sixty-one players, comprising large contingents from nearby Canberra and Wollongong, the fun-loving Sydney "travel group", a pregnant Sue Flack from Bega, and a well-travelled Karen Richards from Western Australia, and of course, the bulk of the large Ulladulla club, enjoyed the ambience of the superb Mollymook Golf Club. The friendly club has uninterrupted views of the ocean and travellers enjoyed nearby holiday accommodation at affordable prices. Local "crown prince" of Scrabble, Gary Pollard, and his club, organised a fun-filled program over 2 days which included many generous cash prizes and novel prizes such as hand-sewn and decorated Scrabble bags. We'll all be back next year for sure.
Tournament highlights were:
1) C division - Heather Sorensen's first ever tournament win, Yvonne Pollard's 2nd ( Gary's mum, not girlfriend ), Stacey Lock Lee's 3rd and highest-scoring game and word ( Graeme's daughter, not girlfriend );
2) B division - the irrepressible Wilma Vialle's win and high game ( Rod's girlfriend, not Graeme's ), Tim Reddan's 2nd after a long absence, Gary Pollard's 3rd despite throwing himself into organising and directing ( Yvonne's son, not drinking partner );
3) A division - top-ranked Jean McGiffen's near-clean-sheet performance to earn her the Ulladulla Champion title ( Graeme's drinking partner, not conqueror ), Alison Rae's magnificent 2nd to signal a possible return to the big time ( Graeme's conqueror, not drinking partner ), Rod Talbot's 3rd to drop points in the Great Ratings Race ( Wilma's boyfriend, not Graeme's ), John Barker's 12th to drop even more points in the Great Ratings Race ( everyone's drinking partner ). Congratulations go to Betty Coleman for taking her opportunity in exalted company to extract 122 points and also to Judy Hay for gaining enough points to qualify for the Victorian Masters in June ( Rod's conqueror and drinking partner ).
...and this one from the Ulladulla Club President Gary Pollard
Sixty one players vied for placings in three divisions over our two day 12 game tourney held at the Mollymook beach-side golf club, a venue greatly appreciated by all.
All players received a personalised (their name and club) book mark and although the prize moneys were generous ($150, $100, $75 1st, 2nd, 3rd respectively), the game word and novelty prizes of Scrabble tile type bags were very much sought after, so much so that I have a number of special orders to fill for those that missed out, the book marks and bags carried the theme ‘SCRABBLE by the sea Ulladulla Tourney 1999’ .
Jean McGiffen was announced Champion as the best divisional winner with eleven wins and consequently collected an extra $50 and Trophy .
Unknown to me at the time, the microphone also carried through to the toilets which caused alarm to Rosalind Gibbons thinking she was in the wrong toilets when Ros heard a male’s voice, and Brian Irwin was quite startled whilst quietly sitting there to hear ‘time is up’ .
Karen Richards and Jean Balmer made a splash in their game together, with such words as piddled and urinate on the board, Karen knocked a glass of water over the board, both were relieved to not have ‘shit’ on the board .
Carole Nomarhas, Dea Mathews, and myself rounded off the weekend very happily on the Sunday evening when in my presence as luck Carole won $350 on a ‘Cashcade’ link poker machine, and Dea wound up winning $300 and from that Carole presented me with the raffle prize she had won (the first in decades), the one I wanted to win.
