Sydney Scrabble Club held it annual tournament at Revesby Workers Club on Saturday, 13th November, 1999. Congratulations to all winners: (A) Bob Jackman (B) Wilma Vialle (C)Esther Rolfe and (D) Silvana Newman. Bob Jackman will be entering the full results soon. The day was a great success except for an unfortunate mishap at the start of game 2. The King of the Hill button was pushed instead of Swiss Draw. Thank you to those concerned (who had to play the same person again in Round 2) for their tolerance in a sticky situation. We welcomed David Boys from Canada and Gerardo Onate from Phillipines. David was the 1995 World Champion and was placed 3rd in the 1999 World Champs. in Melbourne.
I had an interesting game with David and I must say it was a pleasure to play against him. I thought I could keep the game going my way by getting rid of my "V" for 18 pts. David then played through my "V" with INDEVOUT. After scoring 36 myself, the scores were now 384/347. With 6 tiles left in the bag he played GUMNUT for 37 (which he informed me wasn't in his dictionary and didn't know the meaning) He later told John Holgate that he thought it meant a nut who chewed gum. Scores 384/384, Bib and Bub were on my side and I went out with BLUEINGS (63) leaving him with a bad bag pickup of 22 pts. Scores 469/362
Bob's game with David went off with a bang or should I say a "plop". They played on Bob's swivel board with brand new bright green tiles which were all accounted for. During the game they discovered 2 tiles were missing. After several minutes of frantic searching, they decided to play on. Bob won the game but was relieved to find out that during the game David accidentally upended the bag and thought he had retrieved all the tiles. However the 2 tiles were eventually found at the bottom of a half drunk cup of coffee.
I was pleased to see (after about 15 years) an old Sydney club member called Ann Gash. Some of you may remember the lone Grandma who sailed solo around the world in a yacht. I'm happy to know that she is safe and well and I'm sure a Scrabble Tournament is just as exciting as her previous adventures.
