She told me that she had been up till 3am the night before attending to last minute details, so I was not surprised to learn she had forgotton one important element before she rushed out the door - the Round 1 pairings. So Maureen rushed home at 8.45am to get the draws, and her heart sank when they were not there. Or at least she thought they weren't. On further inspection, the draws were found under a box, much to Maureen's relief. She rushed back to the venue, stuck them on the wall, and we all got going.
Actually some of us never got going, but that's another story. One person who did was Alison Rae, who accounted for myself, Joan Rosenthal and Paul Cleary in the space of 4 games. In fact going into the last round, Alison was unbeatable. John Holgate saved the face of the four WSC reps by winning his last game against Alison, and in doing so sneaked into second place.
In B Division, Trish Windhurst of the Woy Woy club on the Central Coast was a surprise winner from her below-midfield seeding. When this happens the spoils in terms of ratings points are bound to be great, as they were for Trish. In coming fourth, Wilma Vialle picked up another 60 ratings points to guarantee the 1998/99 ratings award, a new award to be presented at the upcoming State Championships.
In C Division, the winner, Fay Van Oyen was the only person on the day to win all seven games. Another highlight in C Division was the most impressive 630 points scored by Judy McGuinness in one of her games. She open with 3 bingos, and scored two others, including a closing bingo. In the middle of the game she missed a turn because of an incorrect play! Her winning margin was 370.
Norma Tracey, apart from performing well in her first Masters appearance, won the lunchtime raffle of $50 with a ticket she had not even paid for, and Rene Chelton became the fourth NSW lady player to join the 1000 games club.
