Here is a delayed telecast of events at the Spring Marathon on October 23 at Revesby Workers Club. Due to the WSC I have had my typing finger on hold.
We had 56 entrants this year (up on 36 on 1998). I think the switch to Saturday and the move from Campbelltown suited people better.
A couple of initial hiccups - the Blue Mountains contingent were held up by a bad accident and our printer spluttered and stopped before we could print out the draw for round 1. We thought the problem was a terminal one till George Khamis applied his expertise and found a small paper jam.
Paul Cleary got off to his usual good start and lead the field into lunch. I had close losses to Zuzu (alias Susan Macgillivray) and Trish Windhurst. Bob Jackman got 'out of jail' against Richard Farrington who (with I-S on his rack) pluralised XU and lost.
A mid-afternoon highlight was Cheryl Michler's 1000th game for which she received a rousing cheer.
I had some interesting tussles with Wilma Joan and Paul in the evening session and managed to redeem my ratings nosedive. The game against Paul contained a flurry of eights (FAINTISH, INTERLAP) but I managed to win when Paul was caught with a Q.
But the Marathon was another scalp for Cleary who won by a clear game and +1237 margin.
Victor Tang won the ratings prize for a phenomenal +273 gain. Jean McGiffen won the high game prize for her 555 and Esther Perrins claimed the high word award for 149.
Lee McGiffen did his usual sterling job as DOP assisted by Micahel H and his friend Alex. The sight of them sneaking a game between rounds was encouraging. We might see them rattling tiles in tournaments before too long.
We finished around 10. p.m. exhausted and delerious but with just enough strength to join the obligatory stampede to check out the newly posted ratings list!
