The tournament was ably directed by Gordon Meggs, doyen of the Revesby Scrabble Club. Some innovations were introduced for the day, for example having a spot prizes the highest word with an 'A' in it. Usually you have such prizes for Z, J, Q and X words, and only one player on a table has a chance. But with high volume vowels, both players get a chance.
Another possibly unintentional innovation was to have the microphone turned down to such an extent that the Masters players up the back could not hear what was being said, hence precluding them from scooping the spot-prize pool. As Jean McGiffen said in her short acknowledgement to the organizers whist collecting her bootie for winning the tournament, Gordon has an exceptional sense of humour!
Jean's victory continues the incredibly good run she has been having since the unfortunate passing away of her husband. Rarely now does she not get amongst the placegetters. To emphasize her new strength, she won all her games by a healthy margin. In the process of running into second place, Joan Rosenthal chalked up her 1000th tournament game on Australian soil, while Cheryl Michler proved she is now a force to be reckoned with with her creditable third place.
And so it was that all placegetters in Masters were women, and if it wasn't for Alan Gauci coming third in Division C, all placegetters on the day would have been women. Can any conclusions be drawn from this astonishing result? Personally, I don't think so.
ASPA (NSW) has taken the first step towards phasing out angled play on a stationary board, by making a statement that swivel boards take precedence over standard boards. This was on trial at the Revesby tournament, with mixed results. Understandably, it is difficult to change a habit, albeit a bad one, but we can't go on for ever being the only country that plays in this less than desirable fashion. In addition, a statement has also been made that digital clocks take precedence over analog clocks, and this was well received by the players.
