The seventy two people in attendance were initially inconvenienced by the no-show of Ted Roberts, who had put his name down but forgotton to turn up. The practice of people entering via a sheet at a previous tournament should probably be questioned, as this is not the first time a no-show has been caused by this method.
One person who was happy for Ted not to front was Wilma Vialle. The last minute shuffling saw her promoted from the top of D to the bottom of C, where she scooped the pool by winning all 7 games and going up 120 ratings points.
Graeme Lock Lee showed us he was back on track with a convincing win in B division, while Daphne with the unpronounceable surname followed her State Chapionships triumph with a win in D division.
There were a couple of notable games in Masters. Robin Duncan won a game in which he changed seven times. This contrasts the game between Paul Cleary and myself which was completed in just ten moves each. In that game I managed to play KHODJA, my erstwhile nickname on the MarlDoom.
The raffle was noteworthy. Pat Rae, our permanent look-up operator, was given the honour of drawing the raffle, and mysteriously drew out her own ticket. Then the lucky door prizes were drawn - all four were bottles of champagne, all four went to ladies.
In A Division, John Barker gained 6 ratings points, thanks to a last move win over Sue Gergelifi in the last game. In gaining the points, he has strode to the lead in the Great Ratings Race. Derek McKenzie is now five points behind him and will have to perform somewhere to stop John getting the money.
