With 66 players eager to get started poring over one list, it was soon apparent that this method had no hope of succeeding. Then commenced the process of co-organisers Alan Gauci and Colleen Howie reading out all 68 players one by one in their pairings.
Curiously the number two seed John Holgate was nowhere to be found at the start of play, and it could only be surmised that he had gone to one of the other three venues that had been previously used by the Baulkham Hills club. So with some clever last minute switching of names by Fred Reynolds, tournament director extraordinaire, the tournament finally swung into action.
This was an Open tournament, one of three on the NSW calendar (the others being the Hassall Grove Open and the Spring Marathon) In Open events anything can happen, and this tournament was no exception. Peter Shaw (1672) was beaten by Nanette Reynolds (1138) and Helen Young (974), John Barker (1708) was beaten by Gordon Meggs (1274) and Liz Jackman (1474) was beaten by Donna Macdonald (842) and novice Alice Leow, to name just a few major upsets.
Neil and Alice Leow were a Singaporean husband and wife duo contesting their first Sydney tournament. Alice showed she was no slouch by winning 4 games and coming out of the tournament with a rating of 1243, much to the chagrin of others who had toiled industriously over 300 odd games to reach the same point. The moral here is that open tournaments are a sure-fire way of getting off to a flying start in the ratings, if you are good enough. I'm sure we will see a lot more of the Leows now.
Two other novices, Glenn Brindle and Robert Burnett, literally walked in off the street, never having even visited a club previously. From all accounts, they too were both quite accomplished players.
Credit for the new blood must go to Alan Gauci, who is unrelenting in his quest for new members and new players. The marketing of his club is a joy to behold, with all manner of signage and general promotion in constant use.
Sue Flack made a return to tournament play after a few months travelling overseas. She may have wished she didn't, losing 48 points, but I know she will bounce back. Siva Sivapalasundram was contesting his first tournament since his betrothal. His beautiful wife was on hand to help him present the Siva award to the successful Sydney Scrabble Club, who racked up the most wins amongst the nominated four players. Siva and his wife now reside in Newcastle.
Ted Roberts made a rare appearance, having apparently been beset by a lot of bad luck in recent times. Ted was the direct cause of a difficult situation which Fred Reynolds had to adjudicate on. Ted played a word that he was sure was correct. His opponent, Jean Balmer challenged it. Ted was so sure the word was correct, he had helped himself to six extra tiles. So when the word came back judged as incorrect, Ted found himself with 13 tiles on his rack. The adjudication was that the incorrect word, AGAROT, stayed on his rack, with one other tile of Jean's choice. That was bad luck for Ted. In Ted's defence, he had just returned from Israel, where AGOROT is the local currency. He had obviously learnt how to spend it, but not how to spell it.
But the honours of the day surely belonged to Robyn Flynn, who notched up her first ever major tournament victory with seven straight wins. Her last two wins were over Joan Rosenthal and then myself in the last game. I only had to win that game to win the first prize of $300. But Robyn finished ahead, thoroughly deserving the honours and the money. It is a great environment where lesser lights can occasionally step in and steal the show, and this was definitely one such occasion.
Despite the shaky start, it was a great tournament, and Alan Gauci, Colleen Howie and George Khamis are to be thoroughly congratulated for their effort and enthusiasm in giving 68 Scrabble players a most enjoyable day out playing their favourite game.
