The tournament stumbled to a curious start. Everyone in Divisions A and B were accounted for, but in the remaining Division (C), confusion reigned. Silvana Newman was scheduled to play the ubiquitous A Bye. So she sat quietly down in a corner to serve her penance.
Then the unexpected happened. Margaret Berliner, who had booked in weeks ago, and arrived back in Australia from holidays just in time to take part, appeared. She had been crossed off the list of entrants based on a comment obtained from a member of her household, something like "I don't think she would want to play" I'm not sure what Margaret was told on arriving, but the upshot was that she went home, no doubt someone peeved about no longer being registered. Mind you, Silvana was still sitting in the corner and would have very happily played her.
Next, strange things continued to happen in Division C at the end of the first game. It seemed that none of the score sheets that came in matched what had been typed in as the initial draw. The only correct pairing was Silvana and A Bye! What had happened was that the Computer Operator had been handed an old set of pairings, and not the one the tournament was kicked off with. So after a half hour delay to rectify the situation, game two commenced.
Sunny Wright, now a regular tournament attendee won all her games in C to take the honours, as did my fellow Chatswood player and good friend Norma Tracey in B Division. Norma, a psychoanalyst, picked up 114 rating points in the process.
In Division A, Peter Shaw picked up 155 spread points in his last game against Jean McGiffen, to just miss out on the A division honours. My 35 point victory against John Barker in the last game was just enough to hang on for first place.
