The 64 players in this tournament will remember this one for the rest of their life. They will always remember that immediately after the fourth game, before they broke up for lunch, tournament director Fred Reynolds made the sad announcement about the sad loss of Lady Diana.
This 8 game tourney was the second this year for the young Baulkham Hills Club which was held at the Baulkham Hills Sporting Club. Some "firsts" were made as you will see below. Full marks for all....they were all on time bar one (onle a few minutes), namely Dolores Barbon. After lunch at the beginning of the 5th game, all were on time, except, Dolores....a few minutes....reason....pokies.
Another first....Club opened doors at 8am sharp. By 8.15am All the tiles were set and verified on all the tables. We ask those who were not present or those who have not been told how it was done, to tell us on the net..."how did they do it?????". We think this is a record.
Another first (we think)....For the novices prizes, we deemed that players who were playing their first, second or third tournament were eligible. First prize went to Janice Hobson, her 1st, second to Claire Dove...her 2nd tournament, while third prize was won by Ann Fiddler her 3rd tournament.
Yet another first. Baulkham Hills Scrabble Club does not (yet) pride itself of having the most top players only one in first grade Ted Roberts, but we do our utmost of encouraging beginners, because we feel that is what perpetuates the game. We also appreciate every encouragement that we receive ourselves, be it from our friendly sister clubs, Hassall Grove or Blactown, with whom we get on really well. Since our Club's founding, we grew to appreciate the hard work, good advice, regular teaching techniques of the game given to us by Siva Sivapalsundram ex Tasmania and now with Victoria. When we knew we were to lose Siva, the Club unanimously agreed to create a perpetual trophy to acknowledge his work during his long stay with us. This will be known as the Baulkham Hills Scrabble Club Siva Award. It will be awarded to the club whose members get the most wins collectively. 12 Clubs competed, and was one by North Shore Club.
Yet another first...(we think). At our inaugural tournament last January, we had a guest from Canada (Pat Staub), this time we had a guest from Malta (Paul Mifsud).
To encourage our guests we also had prizes for highest rating gains, which one can observe from results on the net. Had Peter Tobler not cancelled out at the last minute, there would have been exactly 10 men & 10 ladies in the Masters. But a reshuffle resulted in 9 gents & 11 ladies. In this section....the first four were men...of the first 10.....6 were men. In the Advanced only 5 were gents out of 20, while in the Intermediate we only had 3 fellows. Moral :encourage more men?????
Oh, Oh, Oh, another first....I nearly forgot, and Bob J. would not be pleased if I did not tell you. The new book, Redwood Scrabble Word List was on sale for the first time in Australia at this tournament. The president of the Malta Scrabble Club emailed us to ensure that Paul Mifsud will buy one for that Club.
This also could be a first: All lunches were ready on time (by the Club's kitchen) as we requested...1pm....no delays. All in all we enjoyed having our guests and we hope to see them again at our scheduled 3rd tournament in 1998. Yes.....it is on 11 January....the First for that year.
P.S.: This report was inspired by the writer of the Queensland Championships Report...Michael Vnuk ?
