Fred Reynolds was our steward for the day, and as usual kept the field in check with there being no adverse reports due to reckless play. There was some disruption at the top tables due to insufficient rotating boards to go round, and severe space restrictions on the four-person tables. But the idea of anchored boards now seems to be working. Owners of boards who don't want their board anchored are now removing it from the table straight after play, rather than just prior to the next game.
First past the post in Recreation was our wheelchair player, Wendy Evans, who suffers from cerebral palsy. Wendy has a carer who helps with her tiles and scoring, but all the credit for her win at her fifth tournament goes to her. This was the most pleasing result on the day.
Sue Gergelifi would have scored the high word for the day had she not transposed two letters in her attempted nine-timer. This must have been a case of nerves taking over when the finishing post was in sight. Though she lodged a protest on the basis that it was obvious what she intended to play, her opponent was certainly going to hand her a win in that particular race.
Richard Birch caused the upset of the day by beating Chris May in the first game in Masters, but then Chris steadied to win six on the trot and take the prize purse and the winner's trophy.
