78 scrabblers attended Western Scrabble Network's inaugural tournament at Springwood NSW on Saturday. For results and ratings changes refer to Bob Jackman's separate posting. Numbers were a bit disappointing as we had more cancellations in the last week than we had late bookings. Apart from the usual recognition for 1st 2nd 3rd and High Game and High Word, we continued the tradition started by Elizabeth Ho by recognising the highest score from each division NOT resulting in a win. I can't find the little piece of paper that summarised these notable non-winners, but I'm sure it will turn up. Of note was Betty Coleman who achieved a score over 460 losing to Jean McGiffen who notched up over 470.
I'm hoping to get a more detailed report from each of the designated "reporters" from each division over the next few days. I was pleased to be able to find WEEKENd and play it as a double-double for over 100 points. My hope that I may be in the running for high word was rapidly dashed as I observed Chris May play the triple-triple FAIRLEAD for 149. As it turned out, this play resulted in Chris beating his early high word, another triple-triple.
I got my turn at a triple-triple in a game against Joanne Craig after she opened up with RAGSTONE by playing SNEEzERS for 113. Unfortunately, the Z was a blank. Had it been a real Z it would have resulted in an extra 180 points which would have made my position feel more secure.
Probably the most impressive play that I was on the receiving end of was when Ed Okulicz played MOISTER for 106 with the M on a DLS, the S adding to AQUARIAN with the S on the DWS and the R hooking on to CHAI to make CHAIR. Wait there's more: The T and the E also made various 2 or 3 letter words. In summary, this single move resulted in one 9 letter word, one 7 letter word, a five letter word, a 3 letter word, a 2 letter word and a rather demoralised opponent.
As the venue was nowhere near shops, it was decided to throw in a sausage sizzle lunch which appeared to be well received, especially with grape and banana accompaniments.
John Vanderbyl, from Mullumbimby, was the only player to achieve 8 straight wins. WSN's newest member, Phil Smith was looking strong at lunch with 4 wins on the board, however, the momentum was broken in the afternoon and Phil finished up on 5 wins at the end of the day - still a great result for a first tournament.
Members of the Western Scrabble Network were well represented with 16 or the 19 NSW-based members participating.

Special thanks to Mark Smith, Pat Schuberg and Mary Caldbeck-Moore for their
assistance with the smooth running of the tournament in areas too numerous
to mention.
Thanks to Springwood Uniting Church for allowing us to spill over from the
hall into the worship area and thanks to all attendees for respecting the
venue.
And thank you to all who made the effort to make the trip up the Mountains
on an election day and during a time in the Scrabble calendar in which there
is quite a lot going on.
All aspects of the tournament are currently under review and we expect that, if we run a tournament next year, we will do it during a "drier" period in the Scrabble calendar. And we will do our best to ensure that it doesn't clash with events such as elections.
