Alistair Kane and Sue Kyatt from Victoria were late registrations and added an interstate flavour to the event. Unfortunately the net rating gain from the Victorian pool at the end of the day was a miserly 6 points.
The lack of a prepared first round draw meant that the start of play was delayed by about half an hour, and that lunch had to be taken after the third game. The eighth game was eventually completed at around 6.30pm, much later than normal.
Joanne Craig shone is Masters, winning 7 games and being unlucky not win the Section with such a record. In her game against Alistair Kane, her triple-triple of FIDDLERS for 176 netted her both high word and high game.
My first move the tournament was EUOI, against Robin Duncan. He went on to draw two blanks and three esses and win comfortably, and I thought I was going to be in for a disastrous day. Such was not the case.
In Advanced Sam Greenberg showed us that he has not been idle in retirement with a convincing win, only dropping one game. Intermediate went to Jan Tomlin, the convenor of the Terrigal Club on the Central Coast, while in Advanced Rocky Sharma from the Baulkham Hills Club continued his upward spiral. Notably all winners on the day recorded 7 wins.
In the last game there was some drama and audible consternation from the playing area as the lights suddenly went out, right on 6pm. Many would have thought it was a power failure, but the astute amongst the crowd would have realized it was only the customary 'Ode of Remembrance' that all RSL clubs around NSW always conduct - at 6pm!
The Scrabble having being done for the day, a group of 16 of us headed off to apparently the only restaurant in Padstow, the Padstow Inn, ostensibly to celebrate Joanne's birthday which had occurred a few days earlier. Tales of woe and elusive blanks for most were combined with general conviviality, as is the norm.
