The cool weather was welcomed by the crowd of 93 players at our Turramurra tournament last Saturday. Noteworthy entrants included Irishman Maurice McParland (complete with green t-shirt and fabulous accent), Trevor Halsall from Victoria, Edward Okulicz from the ACT, the very sprightly nonagenarian Lan Knox, and ISC playing novice Frank Tao. The tournament progressed very smoothly until the start of game six when printer problems caused a delay of about 20 minutes while computer experts from all divisions performed major surgical procedures to extract an offending scrap of paper.
In the Masters Division, Edward Okulicz finished his eventful year on a high note by winning all 7 games and progressing to number 2 spot in Oz. Trevor Halsall in second place took 63 rating points back to Victoria and Paul Cleary in third place managed to pip Rod Talbot at the post by a margin of 112 points. Tony Hunt took the high game honours with 522 and Joanne Craig addressed the gender balance with the high game score of 119 for "relaxers".
North Shore Club’s Rex Shakespeare won 6 games in Advanced and, with the extra rating points, managed to progress past the coveted 1300 barrier. Trish Windhurst and Nonie English ended the year very creditably by winning second and third place respectively with Nonie gaining 58 ratings points. Ram Mohe’s high game of 603 was a record for the day as was Jenny Templeton’s high word of 126 for "atomized".
In Intermediate Division Baulkham Hills Club President Alan Gauci won 6 games to take out first prize, with Krystyna Batten and Jacquelin Hochmuth taking second and third place. Krystyna and I had a tough battle in game 7 when tables and chairs were being dismantled all around us and I lost by two points. Veena Mohe added to the family’s prize winnings with her high game score of 476 and Linda Dimond also acquired some booty with the high word score of 113 for "acquirers". In the same division Frank Hunt was notable both for his excellent rating gain of 80 points and for spilling the tiles all over the floor when trying to fill the bag at the start of a game.
The North Shore Club members featured again in Recreation Division with Ngaire Ellen winning first prize and scoring 64 rating points. Novice Frank Tao lived up to his reputation by winning 5 games and a rating gain which should take him up a division next tournament. Jyoti Chandna completed her successful first year at Scrabble by winning third prize, Claire Dove notched up 462 for the high game and Pearl Gillot scored 99 for "ravines".
Bev Purkis was the winner of the $100 raffle first prize and Peggy Womersley’s lucky ticket won two bottles of vino to help with her Christmas celebrations.
The day ended on a festive note with a large group making their annual pilgrimage to the Blue Gum Hotel where they celebrated recent birthdays (Sharon Sorensen & John Barker) and another successful Scrabble year. Thanks to Fred, Kim & Kris Logan and all the helpers from the North Shore Club, especially the cooks, and to everyone for coming.
