Kempsey again turned on the sunny weather and hospitality for its annual invasion of Scrabble visitors including 10 Queenslanders and another 26 or so out-of-towners. Leah Jackson and three clubmates from Lismore were amongst them as were the travelling Pollards from distant Ulladullah. Home-made treats awaited travellers and locals at the RSL club and a buffet was served each evening for 54 hungry players. Trophies beckoned on the front tables, tempting all to do their best while a photographer from the local press recorded the action. Organizers Joy Smith, Vickie Underhill and the rest of the dedicated Kempsey Club helpers had prepared all year long to gain sponsorship from Kempsey RSL Club, the tournament venue, and the Moon River Motel where many of the travellers were accommodated. Now it remained to be seen - could the Qld team without Ed and Ann upset the more fancied NSW team? Perhaps a local player would emerge to upset some of the city slickers?
Well if you read the earlier report you would have discerned the answers. NSW won the Kempsey Challenge Cup! In A division, the top 3 places were taken by the top 3 ranked players who happened to be from NSW – Bob Jackman (highest game 566), Joanne Craig and Graeme Lock Lee. Robyn Flynn, now living in the NSW country, grabbed 4th place on margin from 3 others. 5th place was claimed by surprise-packet Maureen See from Qld (highest word 158 for HEREDITY) - not surprising because of her great result (whispers of her ability and potential had already reached Southern ears) but because her name is of Irish origin, not Chinese :) None other than good judge John Barker praised her gameplay and she managed an (harrumph) upset against me so I have to agree. Mind you I did leave an opening for a final turn bingo starting with O after checking that I had crossed off all the O’s and blanks on my tile-tracking sheet. Imagine my surprise when Maureen laid out an unlikely but valid ONSIDES underneath the J of my BENJ “blocker” to snatch the win. Coincidentally, this was one of three final turn bingos that I suffered to also lose to 2nd place-getter Joanne Craig and draw with Martin Waterworth. If only I had read the coaching manual as far as “B” for blocking :( The next-placed Queenslanders were Marilyn Smith at 8th, Martin Warterworth 11th and Olga Visser 12th. The unflappable and unstoppable Bob Jackman’s only loss was late on the second day to enigmatic Jean Noonan 9th who played noticeably better with each drink (ala convivial John Barker 7th).
Veena Mohe (highest word 140 for REQUOTE) played strongly to win B division while collecting a haul of 119 rating points. Husband Ram also collected 88 rating points in A division to qualify for the top division in the forthcoming Nationals so Kempsey will hold very fond memories for the Mohes. Peripatetic pair Sunny Wright (NSW) and Svend Grunnet (highest game 511) (Qld) had happy tournaments to grab trophies for the minor placings. The top-placed local player was enthusiastic Sherie Brown who came 5th and netted the tournament’s top ratings gain of 128 points which, combined with a big haul from her recent Baulkham Hills foray, has elevated her to 909 points after just a few tournaments. She is one to watch. Sherie, a motel manager, is planning to hold a tournament at nearby South West Rocks so keep an eye out for an August date.
I overheard some of the local players relating the highs and lows of their annual tournament experience. Wayne Jones (highest game 453), who is one of only two males in the Kempsey Scrabble club, won C division from Anne Mortel (highest word 122 for BENCHES) and Arie Holla, with excited Rita Louise fading to 5th after a reversal of fortune on day 2. Poor Vicki Underhill finished dead last in B division after winning it the previous year. Oh well there’s always next year!
