Members of Ulladulla Scrabble club were thrilled on the weekend when one of their own, Julia Roberston, was named Ulladulla Champion after the seventh annual championship tournament at the Mollymook golf club.
Julia, the club’s newest member having attended Monday club games just three times, won the Recreation Division with eleven wins from the fourteen games with a margin of +814 over the Advanced Division winner, Betty Foreman's eleven wins margin of 717. Rod Talbot took out the Masters with 10 wins and Pam Bennett the Intermediate division. This is the first time that a local person has won the Championship and we hope it is not the last time.
We had two other novices Susannah Suen a 12 year from Cobargo finishing with 5 wins and Owen Randall of Canberra finishing with 10 wins and second place in recreation. Mal Ramsdale and Mark Smith, both playing in just their third tournament did well to finish 2nd Intermediate and 3rd recreation respectively.
Daphne Bezuidenhout achieved the best ratings gain of 136, Mark Smith went up 93 and Gary Pollard up 89. There were quite a few other dramatic ratings changes as well.
Despite the rain, a (Ulladulla) record field of seventy six players attended after a number of last minute cancellations and three no-shows and all had a great time thanks to the kind and generous support of our sponsors Edgewater and Pidgeon House motels, Office Works, Milton Pharmacy, Harvey World Travel, Bakers’ Delight, MacDonalds and the Mollymook golf club, and of course the members of the Ulladulla Scrabble club, whom without there would be no tournament.
