21 brave souls allotted the entire day and most of the evening, yesterday to SPEEDY 2003 at Colleen Howie's home in Castle Hill.
Players ranged across the entire ratings list and included stalwart Barbara Berlin from Victoria.
We ended up playing 20 games each (plus a bye on each game) in a complete round robin with a format of 10 minutes on each side and sliding penalty of 10 points for the first minute, 20 for the second, 30 for the third and any subsequent minutes, as a result my largest points penalty for the day was 150 points for going more than 5 minutes over. That was reflected all over the tournament.
In all there were 210 games played in the entire day with something to the order of 150,000 points recorded.
John Holgate was outright winner with only 1 loss (to Victor Tung I think, sorry if I am wrong).
Rod Talbot second with 2 losses (or should I say 19 wins). Then Bob Jackman on 17, Jean McGiffen and John Barker on 16 each.
Dark horse was Rex Shakespeare on 14 wins coming #6.
Players quickly realised that normal Scrabble skills almost took second place to actual speed, and the dynamics of Speedy Scrabble took hold.
Colleen and I noted that the coffee was being hit fairly heavily in the morning but tapered off in the afternoon to camomile tea.
Many thanks to those who assisted in the running and catering of this event.
If any of those present have anecdotes, I am sure this list would welcome them.
