The "dome" of Panther's Club Nova Newcastle played host to a late starting 2003 Newcastle Scrabble Tournament on July 27th. Lost players and computer hiccups saw the start delayed almost an hour from the 9:30 advertised start.
63 players faced the starter with Rod Talbot (7/+892) in Master's and Dubbo visitor Ngaire Beehag (7/+516) in Recreational handing in 100% performances. Both players had their sections won before the last match Ngaire's effort was all the more impressive as she had never played outside of "home" Scrabble until today's tourney.
Advanced and Intermediate were much closer affairs with Jean Balmer (6/+250) snatching the win in Adv. and Ann Milner (6/+250) finishing the best Inter. Many players went away with assorted novelty trinkets from the competition to play words associated with a different topic each round.
Thanks go to the Club for use of their facilities, James and Dianne for lookup and computer duties, Reuben, Matt and Josephine for running the challenges and George K, Graeme L-L, Richard B and Rod T for assistance during the day. Also to the members of the Newcastle club for contributions to the raffle and novelty prizes.
