Once again the Wagga Wagga sojourn was a happy weekend for allcomers from NSW and VIC. NSW pulled off a 51-49 win after a neck and neck race over two days.
VIC looked to have the stronger team until Rod Talbot was a late NSW addition, and he led for most of the tournament.
Its just a great weekend at the huge and luxurious RSL club venue. The autumn sun, the beautiful gardens, the manicured lawns, the period houses and wide open spaces are so relaxing. There are accommodations and food for every budget, and those of us who are “regulars” think people just don’t know what they are missing.
The games are played from 2pm Saturday, 5 before dinner, (which is traditionally Chinese food at the venue), and two after dinner. Sunday morning 9 till 12 we have the last three games. There’s a certificate for the best performers (no trophies), but then again no entry fee. The ambience of the tournament is relaxed and good natured. Wilma Vialle, tournament director, kept us all on our toes with humour, and did a great job writing up result sheets faster than the computer could print.
Chile and I arrived after the 450km drive at 6.30 Friday afternoon, enjoyed the best ham from the carvery (smorgasbord $13) and hit the pokies for some handy pocket money. The Pollards were there early too, having the mobile home in the car park already.
After play on Saturday night the Pollards and the Malcolms made handsome couples on the dance floor. A dozen or so scrabblers tossed anagrams (anagram of FLUKIEST?) while chatting and imbibing in the expansive lounge area. Others were trying their “lucky dip” scrabble leanings on the pokies, while the keenest were playing social games in their rooms.
A lot of us had less than 7 hours sleep for various reasons. Richard Birch reportedly led a group of three on a morning stroll, well down on the number of “certain starters” the night before! Heck the weekend is such a lot of relaxing and holidaying, I wish everyone would try it once, its just great timeout.
After the tournament I collected “best moments from people I could find, and I’ve appended those against Bob’s previously reported results.

Say, how often is the high word not a 7 or longer??? After the Sunday noon finish, some stayed around till about 3pm for a variety of lunch options, (coffee shop to smorgasbord), a bit more pokies and chatter. We saw the XPT zip past us as we headed southward home, had a power-nap at Albury, and safely home by 7.30pm. Weekends don’t get much better than that.
