General Report on Junior Event by organiser, Alan Gauci
When I returned home at 7.30pm today from a dual-event, namely the 2003 Hills Open and the Inaugural NSW Junior Scrabble Championships which our Club organised for today, I was somewhat tired.
I had no intention of opening the computer. So I said down, had a cup of tea, and quickly perused a survey form given to the 42 students, aged from 7 to 18 yrs, that took part in today's historical event.
I was very curious to know what sort of a day they had.Upon finishing reading their comments, I gathered enough strength to open the computer and share with you what the students said and some of their comments.
One question on the survey form was, "What did you like the most". I was surprised with many of their similar answers which praised, the supervisors.
Others said that they enjoyed meeting fellow young Scrabblers like themselves, and the happy atmosphere in the hall, the tips that Janice Hoon (School Teacher and a BHSC Scrabble player) regularly gave them between games (5).
Our biggest encouragement was from the harsh critics themselves - the students. All returned the Survey form and all filled in "Yes" to another question - "Would you like us to contact you again the next time we have another Junior Scrabble competition ?".
A full report with photos on this historical event will eventually appear on our Club's website.
There are so many people to thank and who contributed towards this better- than -expected successful day, and we thank them all.
Just for today please let me thank Janice Hoon (our front of house person) and her crew of dedicated supervisors - Serena Guild (Scrabble player & teacher) Robin Duncan, Melinda Hunt, Sue Whelan, Tony Ward (Teacher & School Scrabble Coach, Cumberland High, Andrew Cooper and Gayle Davidson - (School Scrabble Coaches, Pacific Hills Christian School) Helen Ostler, Catering, Bob Jackman, Tony Hunt and Pat Schuberg - School Scrabble Coordinators of Blue Mountains and Sutherland Shire respectively, Ellen Frajman (Liaison officer with Mattel), Mattel for their generous prizes, the Committe of the Orange Blossom Festival who over the last six years continue to support the Hills Open, and all the players at the 2003 Hills Open, who were so kind and generous.
An audience of over 150 people in the hall cheered when Janice Hoon announced the winner of the first Australian Singles title - this was won by 7- year Justin Chan. Two of his games were against two six foot tall 17 year old students. Baulkham Hills High won the "Doubles" title and the "School Scrabble Champion Award". Joanne Craig is this year's Hills Open Champion.
As instigator of this event, I wish to especially thank Baulkham Hills Scrabble Club and the committee of Scrabble NSW for their support and trust.
