This year's "Kick-off" attracted 83 players from three states. The interstate visitors who treated the event as a "warm-up" were all on their way to next week's big event - the Sydney International Sydney Masters. We thank them for making the stop-over and wish them much success at the SIMS.
Our special guest, Mr Tony Ward, maths teacher and Scrabble Coach at nearby Cumberland High officially opened the tournament and spoke very highly on the great rapport that exists between his school and the Baulkham Hills Scrabble Club.
Colleen Howie, Vice-President and Treasurer for the club presented Mr Ward with a memento that acknowledges Tony's support for the School Scrabble Friendly games, which he hosted in 2001 and 2002.
Four novices tasted the tournament experience for the first time - Wee- Peng Chen and Mark Alban from Chatswood S.C. and Greg Pinchbeck and Rocky Sharma from Baulkham Hills.
Greg Pinchbeck (remember the name ) was the star of the show in D Division winning all his seven games, ending with the highest margin of all grades - 549. Wee-Peng finished fourth and took home the High Game award- division D. Helen Ostler from the home Club won the Highest Rating Gain award ( + 133 points).
Congratulations to Diana Field who finished 7th in a field of 18 and won the High Word award for "against" (94 points)
With the help of Greg Pinchbeck, Robin Duncan and Colleen Howie the Club retrieved the Siva Trophy for the first time. It would be noted that it was the Baulkham Hills Club which set up the Siva Trophy in 1997 - but never won it, until "Kick-off 2003".
