The 2003 Beecroft Marathon is behind us. 14 valliant NSW Scrabblers ploughed through 15 games from 8.40 am till 9 pm yesterday. For the second year in a row, my longtime sparring partner Esther Perrins emerged victorious. A sterling effort. John (always a bridesmaid) Holgate came a close second followed by Paul Cleary and Rod Talbot. I do not have the results to hand but I believe all finished on 11 games. Bob Jackman appeared to have been plagued with bad Q luck, apparently costing him a good number of potential wins. This was certainly the case against me, where he lost by 2 points!
It was my impression that, despite all the games played and the short breaks for lunch and dinner, most participants emerged energised and in fine fettle.
Congratulations to Pat Schuberg for the brilliant 9 timer "ambrosia", to Tony Hunt for his high game of around 58, and to Norma Tracey for her speedy identification of the Shakespeare exerpt played during the now traditional musical interlude after supper.
My thanks to my darling wife Julie who exited the house cum children for the day. I have a high price to pay for her generosity; I have been requested to avoid my normal grumpiness over Xmas!
