Ably directed by Gordon (the font king) Meggs, with assistance at the microphone from Judy Hay, the tournament appeared to go off without a hitch, finishing on schedule.
Some notable achievements were the performance of the star of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire John Holgate winning all 7 games in Masters, adding $100 to his recent $32,000 windfall.
Richard Jeremy joined the dedicated crew from Canberra who regularly come to Sydney to plunder our rating points, taking out the Advanced Section with 6 wins and a ratings gain of 154 points.
In Intermediate, Wollongong's Jean Balmer made a strong return to the Scrabble circuit to be only pipped on the post by Nonie English for first place, whereas in Recreation, Wollongong's Trisha Shephard, also from the Wollongong Club narrowly edged out Ann Schick to take the honours.
One interesting aside was the novelty prize for the longest word played on the day. In Masters, I managed to extend WORTS to COLEWORTS in game 2 against Rod Talbot, and this stayed on the wall chart right up to the last game. During his last game against John Holgate, Rod extended FOREWARN to FOREWARNED holding three Us in his rack to do it, thinking that would win the novelty award. However, being our Equipment Officer and having to set about packing up the gear after his game, he forgot to write his ten-letter word on the chart. This meant that I was unfairly announced as the winner of the batch of scratchies that was the award. We agreed to share the booty, and set about scratching only of course to jointly end up with zilch.
