The roll-up for the tourney was one short of the 100 mark. Two novices from the Manly Club arrived during game 2, not realizing they had to be there for the start of play. Luckily they had been left in the draw for this contingency.
An innovation that was introduced for this tournament and worked well was the staggered lunch. Advanced and Recreation were sent to lunch first, while Masters and Intermediate played on. This had the positive effect of enabling the tournament to finish ahead of schedule. The only negative effect was tournament director Wilma Vialle not getting a mid-tournament break, and having to eat at her post.
In Masters, John Holgate needed to win the final game against me to win the event. This he did by replying to my opening play of ENcRATY for 76 with BApTIZES for 126, followed by ENRHEUMS for 68 to establish a 100 point lead after two moves.
Another milestone occurring in Masters was that of Jean McGiffen notching up her 2000th tournament game. Jean is only the third player in Australia to achieve this feat.
In Advanced, Victor Tung was desperate to win all his games and possibly qualify for the upcoming Winter Masters. Unfortunately Victor tied one game, and fell short of his goal by 34 rating points, but he still won the Division in convincing style.
In Intermediate Janine Whittaker impressed by recording a healthy rating rise in only her second tournament, after her impressive debut in Wollongong two weeks ago.
In Recreation, all honours went to host club player Jacquelin Hochmuth who recorded high word (UNIVERSE for 149), high game (446) and victory in the Division.
A special award for the highest scoring non-bingo play from any Division went to Rex Shakespeare in Intermediate for his play of SQUID for 87 points.
19 of us finished the day off with a superb meal at the Lane Cove River Steakhouse in West Chatswood. John Barker made a short speech, Chris May drowned his sorrows and Jacquelin Hochmuth explained how it was all done.
