"Kick-off" tournaments in mid-January every year at Baulkham Hills mark the official start of the Scrabble tournament season in New South Wales.
This year's tournament attracted 83 contestants from three States as well as an inland player from Orange NSW, -Tony Kalyzich who ended up winning the "Highest rating gain" award. NSW Contestants came froma wide cross-section of the Sydney Metropolitan area as well as the Central and South Coast areas.
The crowd was a mixed one indeed with the four Australian WSC representatives playing - Edward Okulicz, John Holgate, Paul Cleary & Rod Talbot - Sunshine state Juniors Alastair and Elliott Richards , Chile & Harry Malcolm from Victoria as well as Olga Visser and Karen Richards from Queensland, and novices Mike Oxby and Susi Banks from NSW.
The Club's catering staff kept the food tables well supplied with all sorts of goodies and drinks. As per usual, January is a hot month in Sydney. Feedback from our guests indicate they were very pleased with the Hall which we hired for the occasion - not perfect but better.
"Kick-off 2002" was directed by Mr Fred Reynolds, who as always gives his 110%.
