Adrian Van Oyen, husband of main organiser Fay, was on hand in the foyer to welcome in the playing contingent. Also welcomed were the local press who managed to witness some early action and get something of a story.
One visitor of note was Ruth MacInerney from the United Kingdom, who was having a Scrabble holiday in Australia to warm up for SOWPODS play in England. She claimed to have beaten Andrew Fisher once, so it was with trepidation we placed her in Recreation Division. Luckily we were vindicated when she lost an early game. Ruth plans to play in Melbourne and South Australia during her visit. Other players of note to attend were Matte Dunne, 8th in the Nationals and en route from Tassie to Melbourne for the Victorian Championships, and the jetsetting Ian Hoffman from Brisbane, in town on business.
A big win against Alison Pollard in the first game catapulted me to the lead, which I was able to hold for the rest of the day thanks to more than my fair share of blanks and esses. Some of my better bingos were NIBLICKS, SOLARIUM, DUMAIST, READJUST, NOVENARY, GARDANT, ETERNISE, GARROTS, OVERTRIM and REALTORS. Jean Noonan was the big improver in Masters with an 81 point rating gain, while Hanne Marks also collected some big scalps with her 55 point gain.
Cheryl Michler showed she was ready to have another crack at Masters with a one game win in B Division, while Judy McGuiness was victorious once again in C. In Recreation, Tricia Shephard from WORDS followed up her impressive second in Ulladulla with a big win which begs the question how far will this lady go?
A malfunctioning microphone played havoc with players' eardrums early on but this was quickly forgotton as the day unfolded. For the modest $22 entry fee players were treated to a roast beef luncheon, pavlova dessert and a complimentary drink. Prize money was generous as I can attest - $100 for first in all divisions, and with eight games being played this was all in all a good value day staged for us by the hard-working Sutherland SOS club.
