In fact things seemed to occur in pairs a lot for this tournament. For starters two players returned from a four year spell to take part. Both had last played in November 1997, both were females - Evelyn Goh and Gay Brown. Two players, again both females, came down from Queensland as part of a three weekends NSW Scrabble spree - Anne Drew and Olga Visser. Two novices competed in the event, both were male and both started off in Intermediate Division - Rod Olizon from the host club and Andrew Dempster from Canberra.
And John Barker on his way to winning Masters got handed two games on a plate. One from Graeme Lock Lee who went less than a minute over time in his 8 point loss, and one from Derek McKenzie who let John get away with RODGERS* in a crucial part of the game. But full credit to John for his unbeaten effort, a feat which was also emulated by Krystyna Batten in Recreation with her clean sweep.
A procession of high word scores occurred during the day. Evelyn Goh had pushed the record to 203 for her BREWINGS in game 5 but then Olga Visser came along and pipped her on the post with 206 for REEKIEST in the last game. Neither of these 200+ scores occurred in the high game for the day which went to Robyn Flynn in Masters for her 545.
Those that liked to eat between each break were disappointed as lunch and afternoon tea were the only opportunities to eat at this event. And those that liked collecting certificates also missed out, as this formality also dispensed with. The result - 7 games easily served up to 95 Scrabblers in a no frills day at the Chatswood Club.
